About

GT Standard is a contemporary response to the pursuit of typographic standardization. Rooted in Swiss modernist principles of geometry and minimalism, it builds on this lasting legacy, refining and expanding its approach for today’s digital landscape.
Designed with clarity and adaptability in mind, it systematically distills typography to its essentials, creating a typeface that is both neutral and expressive. Three optical sizes, six proportional widths, six monospaced widths, and variable font capabilities make it a flexible, fully adaptive system.
GT Standard is designed not only for neutrality, but for precision: a typeface that provides structure without imposition, clarity without excess, and adaptability without compromise. A working tool for those who seek coherence, balance, and efficiency. Setting the new standard.
GT Standard is built on simplicity and precision. Its design distills typography to its purest form, using basic, geometrically-inspired forms to create a versatile, highly adaptable type system.
Stripped of excess, its construction balances clarity, efficiency, and function. This ensures a seamless fit across applications.

Design

Anatomy

The design starts with the fundamentals: squares, circles, and triangles. Finding harmony between counters and letter spacing, this geometric foundation shapes a typeface that is structured yet fluid, offering both consistency and flexibility.

Efficiency

Efficiency is central to the design. A tall x-height minimizes visual disparity between upper and lowercase letters. This helps maintain readability in dense layouts. Short descenders allow for tighter leading, optimizing space without sacrificing clarity. This fine-tuned balance ensures economical typesetting while preserving the visual impact it delivers.

Minimalism

The typeface embraces minimalism through the intention and precision of its design choices. By focusing on essential forms and eliminating excess, it achieves clarity and functionality. Its refined construction ensures seamless integration into any design, acting as a sophisticated yet unobtrusive typographic tool.

Dynamic

Subtle curves and refined proportions give the design a dynamic presence. Horizontal elements establish a calm, structured tone, while circular details inject warmth and approachability. This interplay of rigid and rounded forms makes the typeface both precise and expressive.

Four heavy-duty axes with 126 upright and 126 oblique styles — all together in one big variable font. And we haven’t even touched on the 84 monospaced styles. GT Standard is a systematized typographic workhorse built on four variable axes: weight, width, slant, and optical size.
These four defining cornerstones allow the typeface to live up to its name, delivering a tool that sets the standard in both function and expression. Whatever the size, setting, or scale of application.

System

Weight Axis

The typeface’s weight axis is a carefully defined curve that creates seven seamless weights. This mathematical approach ensures smooth transitions, balanced forms, and consistent clarity.

Optical Axis

GT Standard’s optical sizes fine-tune letter proportions for clarity at every size. By adjusting counters, spacing, and weight distribution, words remain clean and clear in small text and striking at larger sizes. This ensures legibility and consistency across all applications.

What works well at large sizes — like tight spacing and dramatic contrast — often breaks down at smaller scales. And the reverse is true too. Forms optimized for small text can feel dull or too loose when scaled up. GT Standard solves this automatically. With the automatic optical sizing feature, the typeface adapts in real time. No manual tweaking needed.

Distinction

Legibility relies on clear character differentiation. GT Standard enhances this through subtle design choices that ensure distinct letterforms. This prevents confusion between similar characters, reduces reading fatigue, and improves usability in any context.

Common culprits like e and a or c and o can blur together at smaller sizes. GT Standard avoids this with precise apertures and counter shapes that stay open and readable, even when scaled down.

Reading

Across the family, the typeface’s design enhances reading flow by supporting pattern recognition — the way our eyes identify word shapes and line patterns. Balanced counters and precise letter spacing create clear, distinct word forms, making long texts easier to read.

Color

Consistent typographic color is key to readability. The typeface’s design maintains balance through optical adjustments like ink traps and tapering, preventing text from appearing too dense (or too light). This results in a uniform, balanced aesthetic at any size.

Width Axis

The meatiest of its axes, the typeface’s variable width radically transforms the geometric, circular base of the Standard width. By morphing into more oval-based forms in its narrow and extended extremes, GT Standard is both functional and visually unified.

Compact

GT Standard’s Condensed style is optimized for tight spaces while maintaining the typeface’s strong geometric clarity. Compressed takes this a step further, refining proportions while keeping legibility intact, with alternate forms like S and J enhancing clarity.

Regular

Narrow sits between Standard and Condensed. It’s a space-saving alternative that maintains the open, proportional feel of the core family, without adopting the more compact forms of the Condensed or Compressed styles.

The standard width is the foundation of GT Standard’s design. Balanced and versatile, it provides a stable and adaptable typographic core as the type family’s base.

Wide

On the other end, the Extended and Expanded styles introduce elongated forms with oval-based structures. These wider cuts command attention without losing the typeface’s structured consistency and adaptability.

Mono

GT Standard’s Monospace applies its geometric precision to a fixed-width environment. Each character is carefully adjusted for even spacing and readability, retaining the proportional typeface’s clarity while ensuring functional consistency. Each width fits neatly into the larger modular system, reinforcing the family’s underlying grid logic.

Designing a monospaced typeface means rethinking proportions to fit every character into the same width. That constraint leads to unconventional solutions like adding baseline serifs to the i and l for clarity, or giving the r a full semicircle to balance space. These adjustments preserve legibility while embracing the strict logic of a mono grid.

Features

GT Standard includes practical and versatile typesetting features, like the choice between single-story and double-story designs for a and g, or circular and rectangular dots. Stylistic sets allow for subtle shifts in tone or function. In the Compressed styles, alternates for J, t, f, and r feature extended hooks that make full use of the narrow width — improving balance, legibility, and rhythm in tight layouts.

GT Canon

GT Canon is GT Standard’s upcoming serif counterpart, sharing the same commitment to versatility, consistency, and clarity. Designed as a companion system, it brings the same standardized logic to a serif context, expanding the system’s reach while staying true to its core principles.
GT Standard is a study in precision, minimalism, and adaptability. Built from fundamental, geometric shapes, it balances clarity and expression to create a versatile typographic system. Its four variable axes — weight, width, optical size, and slant — forge a dynamic range of styles, ensuring seamless transitions and consistent readability across any scale or medium.
From compact compressed cuts to colorful expanded styles, GT Standard remains elastic, embodying functional modernism while serving as a timeless tool for contemporary typography.
